New year, new students!! We are a dual immersion program in an urban and economically challenged setting, meaning students spend half their day in English and half their day in Spanish. Our goal continues to be to appreciate being multilingual and to love other languages. We celebrate the various cultures of our class and the strengths of each child: their humor, artistic abilities, academic strengths, their empathy and caring natures, and their athletic feats to name some.
Second graders have an innate curiosity, wonder and enthusiasm about the world that we want to sustain for the rest of their lives.
They can make airplanes, people and objects out of anything put in front of them and their creativity knows no bounds. Friday STEAM afternoons are going to be the highlight of our week to collaborate and think outside the box.
My Project
The second grade team is thinking of ways for students to practice writing words in engaging, independent centers. These materials are for students to practice spelling and seeing patterns in words. These materials are for four second grade classrooms.
Bright letters, movable pieces, and using fingers to create the letters will imprint the letters and patterns on students' brains.
Students will walk over to the center and grab their words (differentiated for what THEY need!) from the colorful library pockets. Then students will grab a plastic box with the materials inside to practice writing those words. The materials will change every two weeks. The wikki stix and playdough are to help students form letters with their fingers. The different crayons, markers and pens are to add a bit of pizzazz and magic to writing words repetitively. The magnetic letters and whiteboard markers are for students to use on magnetic boards. Our words are going to sparkle!
