My Project

Being a first-grade teacher for over ten years were some of the best times of my life. I collected everything that a first-grader needed. Especially books. I had a student-led classroom. The first grader knew where everything was placed so they could get it on their own. I even had snacks readily available for when they followed the classroom rules.

This year I am a special education teacher for our middle school seventh graders, (and boy what a difference).

Being back in the special educational field is so great to me. The students in special education face different challenges than the students in the general population. That is what make them so phenomenal. I have my students for a 90 minute class period, three times a week. One to two times a week the student have DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read). This means that the students have to get a book off of the shelve and read for twenty minutes. Being that so many of my student read two grade level below their grade level, I have many students just sitting there not reading. Not that they don't want to, it is because they don't know how to read "at level" books. The student led classrooms worked so well in my first grade classes, that I wanted to try it with my 7th grade special education class. However, I ran into some barriers because they don't use some of the same material. Therefore I am asking for donations for individual binders, file folders, laminating sheets, individual folders, fidgets, and snacks. My goal is to have the 7th graders become better readers and to know how to do things on their own.
