My Students

As a Special Education teacher in a large, low-income, neighborhood high school, I know that my students face many hurdles. Not only do my students have the difficulties of coming from high-poverty areas, they also have been diagnosed with a variety of disabilities including Specific Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbances, Autism, Intellectual Disabilities and ADHD. Many of my students are not lucky enough to be given daily praise or encouragement from their families, yet they still come to school everyday. My students may have limited abilities but they are hopeful, passionate and work hard.

My Project

I need a new class set of the adaptive text, The Scarlet Letter. My Learning Support classes are larger this year and, inevitably, some copies go missing each year. Because of this, I need 15 new books so I have a complete class set. My students will be able to read independently and feel a sense of pride in their reading.

By using an adaptive text, the classic novel is written on a lower reading level, making it accessible to all students.

My hope is that my students will be able to participate in friendly conversations with their non-disabled peers about this text. I need a new class set to make this happen.
