Help me give my students the opportunity to be good spellers and word detectives by using magnetic alphabet letters to see word structures, and manipulating word construction with their own set of word building tiles.
Our school has over 800 students in grades K-5 - one of the largest elementary schools in the state of Wisconsin. My class is a multiage classroom comprised of both third and fourth grade students. Although students are at different grade levels, they learn alongside and from each other. Students are in my class for both their third and fourth grade years, which provides me the opportunity to make deep connections with each student as well as their families. The hardest part is letting them move onto fifth grade at the end of their fourth grade year!
My students are curious, eager learners anxious to discover more about their world.
They ask questions. They search out the answers. Each of my students are unique and have their own interests. I love watching each of my students get excited about learning!
My Project
Word work is an important component to our balanced literacy program. It is a hands-on time to explore the spellings and meanings of words that students encounter in their daily immersion with text through both reading and writing. Word work helps my students become better readers, spellers, and writers.
These resources will completely transform my students’ experience with word study as they will be able to manipulate letter tiles as they grapple with word spellings, constructions, and meanings.
Providing each student with letter tiles as well as a larger, magnetic set to model skills will help students explore, attend to, learn about, and efficiently use sounds, letters, and words. Utilizing these materials will allow students to develop a deep understanding of how words work.
