My Students

My students attend a special education program in Chicago. They are motivated to learn so that they can find a job. They also love an adventure! We often take trips throughout the neighborhood to learn about our community and various job possibilities after graduation.

Since my students have Autism and Cognitive Delays, most will enter the work force with out college.

They hear so much about careers for student's who will attend college. They need to learn and see other people, who are like themselves, who are working.

My Project

My students see people working every day. But, they do not see people who are like themselves working every day. This experience will take my students to see people without a college education, who look and act like them, working in a restaurant.

Our excursion will take us to a restaurant staffed by people with various disabilities-as my student's say "people just like ME!" We will visit the Green House Inn Restaurant run by Misericordia Heart of Mercy.

According to their website, the organization's goal is to "support children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who choose our community by providing the highest quality residential, training, and employment services. We provide the full continuum of care designed to meet each person’s changing needs and maximize his or her independence, self-determination, interpersonal relationships, and engagement in the community. Through our dedicated families, employees, volunteers, supporters and community networks, we offer an environment that fosters each person’s spirituality, dignity, respect, and quality of life."

In addition to having lunch, the students will get to see employees "like me" working in the bakery, the gift shop, and living on the campus. We also plan to meet some employees and supervisors to ask specific questions and learn about jobs that might be "for me".
