I am a third-grade teacher in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. I teach thirty 8-10 year olds who have a wide range of abilities-- some can barely read while others are ready for 4th grade work. My students will be taking a new writing test in late winter. Last year it was so difficult to motivate them to write, and it took most of the year to even get them to come out of their "writing shells." I thought that if I could find something that would make their finished product special, perhaps they would be more motivated to complete it. I found just the thing! I am requesting a bookbinding machine for my classroom. This machine takes ordinary paper and securely binds it together with a colorful plastic binding. It makes books look more professional and also eliminates stapling and tearing. I would teach my students to use the machine themselves, and also explain that only their BEST work will be able to be bound. Of course, this would not be a competition, but an inspiration for students to work to their own individual potential. I believe that this machine will be a great motivator for my students to begin writing... and hopefully, by mid-year, they will begin to get excited on their own! Thank you so much for your willingness to invest into my students lives. Write on!
