Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students live in one of the poorest communities in Brooklyn. Some live in shelters and travel a great deal to arrive at school. Most are from single family homes and most of them live in the housing projects close by. They are wonderful creative, talented, and artistic children. They are always eager to be at school with their friends and teachers. Our school is predominantly African American with a small percentage of Hispanic children. Around 97% of them eat the free lunch at our school.

My students have a great passion for the arts and love creating and exploring with new materials.

They are passionate about art making! They are fun, silly, energetic, and talented children ! Art making is a powerful learning tool.

My Project

In many cultures, weaving was a form of communication and a way to preserve history and tradition. My students will create a personal narrative story through weaving combining writing and learning the history of weaving. I seek funding to purchase materials essential for teaching and practicing the art of weaving, including yarn, looms, and other necessary supplies. These materials will empower my students to create narrative-based weaves while exploring different weaving techniques. Additionally, I will use these materials to enhance my skills and provide hands-on learning experiences in weaving.

The materials purchased through this funding will directly contribute to enriching the students' educational experiences, helping them develop both technical skills and creative expression. By incorporating weaving into the curriculum, I can provide my students a unique, meaningful way to explore art, culture, and self-expression while integrating key academic skills in an engaging, hands-on manner.
