This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I specifically work with students who have been through multiple traumatic childhood experiences. These students as a result have a variety of mood, impulse control disorders, emotional and physical trauma that directly and indirectly affect their learning and behavior in the school setting. These children have grown up in an inner city, surrounded by violence and lack of social supports . Most of these students have either been homeless, live in poverty, in foster care, or in residential placement away from their families. Despite what these children have been through, they come to school each day to find a safe place to learn.
These children are survivors of some of life's most tragic and heart-wrenching circumstances and deserve to have valuable resources, most of which can't be provided by the school, let alone from home.
These students are at a disadvantage from other students who have been raised under different circumstances and can not be expected to change bad behaviors when they do not have the skill set or resources to do so. These children would benefit from resources to use in the classroom that help control impulses, emotional regulation, and promote attention that are harder for these children to control.
These items are designed to help children with ADHD, anxiety and emotional regulation. The wobble chairs and chair bands will be used for children with extreme symptoms of ADHD as well as children who struggle to release stress appropriately. Children of this age group generally struggle with fidgeting and sitting still, but my students have added trauma that expresses itself in similar ways and pushes these behaviors to an extreme level.
These tools will be used to help students release energy and stress by allowing them to move freely without getting into trouble for a behavior that is used as a way to cope with stress.
My students are being called out more frequently for excessive movement and disruption which then causes more anxiety about something that they feel like they can't control. This then takes their attention off of the lesson and turns into misunderstood frustration that causes further disruption and aggressive behaviors.
