My students need red worms to create composting bins. They will use their data to observe and measure different parts of biogeochemical cycles.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are AP Environmental students who need lab materials for field work investigations. Due to budget cuts there is not money to take them on field-trips. However, I am trying to provide them with the same learning experiences in the classroom.
My students attend a small charter school in southern California of about six hundred students.
They are primarily Title I students are receive free or reduced lunch. It is a high achieving school that lacks financial support due to budget constraints.
My Project
Students will observe biogeochemical cycles in action and measure concentrations of the elements. They will breed red worms to start a composting campaign on campus. Finally, they will use some of the red worms to create Eco-columns that will further their investigations of the biogeochemical cycles.
This will tie together various units such as the water cycle, land use, waste disposal among many others.
It will also allow students to create their own experiments using the scientific method.
