Worlds Away: Exploring Cultural Differences While Making Connections Through Reading

My students need to experience real-life stories of children, teens, and young adults from all over the world overcoming all different types of challenges and conflicts in order to broaden their understanding of their own world.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Muhlbaier's classroom raised $1,964

My Students

My Language Arts 2 College Preparatory students are, first and foremost, people. In my 10th grade World Literature course, we journey through time and space via literature.

I challenge my students to connect to the literature we read through collaborative activities and discussions that emphasize important skills required for the 21st century student.

Through these activities and discussions, students are able to realize that fairy tales, Greek myths, and the works of Shakespeare are relevant, interesting, and worthy of study.

My Project

Because our school's 10th grade Language Arts course focuses on World Literature, I want to provide my students with contemporary nonfiction works from outside of the US and Europe for them to study. Through Literature Circles, an authentic way for students to experience the "adult" side of reading, students will choose, read and discuss these works in order to make connections to their own lives.

Many of my students may never leave our county, let alone the state.

With your help, I hope to open their eyes and hearts to the experiences of others from different continents, becoming both their literary travel agent and teacher.
