I am a third grade teacher who teaches all subjects. I work in a low-income high-need community. I have 20 wonderful students in my class.
My class is very motivated to learn but they are lacking many materials that can enhance their learning. In the beginning of the year I had asked the students to bring in money towards Time For Kids so we can get a subscription, but only two students brought it in and we were unable to get it. I would love to be prepared next September and have Time For Kids. Knowing what is happening in the world gives my students a sense of importance and awareness.
Having Time For Kids will provide me with a way to effectively teach current events. This provides another way to motivate the children to read and develop more of an awareness of what is happening around the world. I will use the magazines for many future projects in the classroom. Our first project that would be done with the magazine will be based on the election. Since Time for Kids has so much information on the election it will be easy for my students to learn about it. I plan on holding a mock election in the class and creating an actual voting booth. I will also use the Time for Kids as another means of parent involvement. I will have the students share their favorite article with a parent and have small tasks for the child to complete with the parent depending on the article. Many of the parents in my school want to be more involved in their child's education but are unsure of what to do. This will help give them another resource to use with their child.
My students have so much potential to go on and be very successful adults. Although a magazine may seem small anything that can spark a child's interest in school can make a difference. Your help will ensure that my students get the same resources that children in wealthier areas are able to receive.
