World Literature in My Classroom

My Students

We connect to the literature we read, and students form their own opinions about life. Robin Williams (Dead Poets Society) defined the purpose of our class when he said, "I always thought the idea of education was to learn to think for yourself."

Our high school has a student body with over 2,000 students.

Even though we are a big school, we don't have a lot of diversity. Our school boundaries cover a large area. Most of our students come from small towns and farming communities. We have great students who work hard. Many of our students will be first generation college students. There is a great sense of school pride at our school, and students enjoy attending activities like football games and school dances. The area is a close-knit community, and many of the students don't think about life in other parts of the world.

My Project

I would love to have every student read the books, The Alchemist and The Namesake. I will check out a copy to every student for the term. We will read it together as a class like a book club. Each day they will be expected to read a determined number of pages. We will then have class discussions about the pages read. Through this book we will discover different cultures and people.

Statistics show that many high school students today feel a sense of entitlement.

In my school, many students don't understand or think about what happens in other places. Students who read this book connect to it; I want my students to value different cultures and ethnic groups. This book can help them do that.
