My Project

I always like to incorporate current events into my classroom projects for my class of English Language Learners. This year, I have the once-in-a-four-years opportunity to involve the FIFA World Cup into our current events. Many of my international scholars are already excited about the World Cup, which makes this a great opportunity to engage my otherwise reluctant readers. Not only can this be a fun way to learn about other countries, but also to reflect on how so many people come together to enjoy this competition. Therefore, Webster's English Language Development team is hoping to read "Outcasts United" by Warren St. John, a book that follows the inspiring journey of a youth soccer team.

By discussing the book "Outcasts United", students can reflect on their own diverse experiences while developing empathy and understanding of people.

"Outcasts United" is acclaimed for the poignant and true story of young refugees teaming up together in a small town in Georgia. The Library Journal reviewed the book Outcasts United by saying: "Not merely about soccer, St. John's book teaches readers about the social and economic difficulties of adapting to a new culture and the challenges facing a town with a new and disparate population..."
