Workspaces for Virtual Learners

Help me give my students an appropriate place to learn while engaging remotely at home with a student size table as a designated work space and the needed school supplies to complete learning activities.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My students are a fun and optimistic group of 5-8 year old children with autism but they are facing extreme challenges during this school year while learning at home.

In March, when buildings closed, many of my students did not have a designated learning space within their homes. They would sit in beds or on the floors engaging in zoom lessons which did not provided the needed structure to support attention and focus. They also would struggle with completing worksheets/activities because they did not have a stable place to write or the basic school supplies available. They enjoy learning; however they are delayed in the areas of attention, focus and communication. Having the right resources with a designed learning space at home will support each and every student's individual growth during this time of virtual learning.

My Project

My students need a structured learning space at home that supports their engagement in a virtual environment. They need an assigned space that is appropriately sized for them to complete academic activities including writing, cutting/glueing; as well as, a place to sit while interacting in computer based learning and instruction. Due to fine motor delays my students struggle with using the track pad on the computer, so I would like to provide them with a wireless mouse to support their digital interactions. I would like to give my students the access to the school supplies that are available in my classroom while learning at home to make sure they are able to continue their skills development while at home. They need to practice writing, cutting, matching, glueing and coloring to build their basic skills.

I believe that if I can provide each child with a small table and chairs to do their lessons as well as the school supplies that would be available in my classroom they would prosper in this new virtual environment.
