Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are creators and problem-solvers who thrive with hands-on projects. These bikes will transform their learning by combining physical skills with STEM concepts. Students will learn bike maintenance, safe urban cycling, navigation, and the physics of motion – while staying active and gaining independence.

Our goals are to teach sustainable transportation, boost confidence through new skills, and connect math/science to real-world experiences.

Whether calculating gear ratios or mapping routes, students will see how classroom concepts apply to daily life. As their teacher and daily bike commuter, I'm excited to share cycling skills and sustainable transportation with our students. Additionally, my 12th grade statistics class will measure the project's impact through surveys and data analysis as part of an American Statistical Association competition.

Each bike lets a student participate fully in our bike rodeos, maintenance workshops, and neighborhood exploration rides. With practice in our large, fenced-in schoolyard followed by guided city rides, students will master safe cycling while building community and environmental awareness.

Many of our students lack access to bikes and safe spaces to learn cycling. This project, born from student voice and choice, opens new possibilities for exercise, transportation, and discovering their city. Their enthusiasm for hands-on learning makes them ideal candidates for this innovative program combining technical skills, physical activity, and academic concepts.
