Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are mostly second language learners that are craving the opportunity to experience and engage in activities and extracurricular programs that they usually do not have the support or financial ability to do so.
My running club is comprised of underprivileged students who do not have the resources to get involved in outside sports and PE activities.
My running club kids range from first to sixth grade with the help of a few parent volunteers. My students are not just those that are in my classroom each day, but all of those that are serviced within our entire school.
These kids have the potential to become amazing students as well as athletes if given the opportunities and outlets that allow them to work on their physical fitness and health. Most of them come from struggling families that don't have the ability to get them involved in team sports or teach them the importance of health. Who knows, running may become the hobby and passion of a few that end up competing for the GOLD one day.
My Project
My students that join the running club are looking to take part in a team sport that focuses on bettering their health and fitness. It's not often that they have the opportunity to be involved in after school sports, so this enables them to train, condition, and compete in order to improve their overall fitness level. Building team spirit and allowing these kids to have fun while doing it, gives them a sense of accomplishment, builds confidence, and promotes responsibility. I am asking for 42 pairs of running shorts in assorted sizes so that my kids can be comfortable during their running workouts.
Most of my students run in jeans or pants because they don't have the extra money to buy shorts to run in, so this project would give them the chance to run in proper workout attire.
We also raise money to fund the team's entrance fees to enter various local 5K races and competitions. The running club is a "free" sport for them to join and have the experience of a hobby and possibly lead to a future endeavor in high school or college athletics.
"My priority is to turn people- especially kids onto sports and being active, so they don't even have to think about it being good for their health. If people participate for the fun of it; and believe me- it is fun, then fitness programs will be much more successful"- Alan Thicke
