Working With Clay in an Anatomical Way

My students need tools to manipulate hard oil-based clay into shapes modeling structures of the human body like blood vessels, nerves, and flat straps of muscular tissue.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a colony of artists. Ours is a public charter school that requires an application and multiple forms of audition. Not only are there academic requirements, but also some form of performance specific to one of our fourteen artistic conservatories. These students are amazingly talented and also bright, diverse, tolerant, and empathetic. They have often been pushed to the margins of a traditional public school, but here they are accepted and celebrated by other artistic thinkers with high expectations for themselves and their community. They truly want to be here at this school and in my elective course; this makes a huge difference and leads to enormous amounts of effort and drive.

My Project

Through a grant from our school’s parent organization, I was able to procure a class set of Anatomy in Clay “Maniken” models. They arrived just in time for our unit on the Muscular System. Instead of trying to memorize hundreds of muscles, students chose groups according to common interests and researched two activities pertaining to them. They then sculpted the skeletal muscles responsible for their chosen activities, photographed their models, and presented out to the class about the muscular actions.

Sculpting human body structures out of clay makes the experience kinesthetic, immersive, and much more memorable.

I observed an impressive and increased level of engagement in my students in this unit of study. The students were interested and focused and working together meaningfully with their group. I heard relevant vocabulary being used accurately and often. The students at OCSA are scholars who value and are passionate about many art forms. The integration of artistry appeals to their particular learning style and helps to better prepare the people who may become our next generation of nurses, doctors, physical therapists, and athletic trainers.

There are multiple body systems that can be modeled onto the Anatomy in Clay Maniken model: nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, digestive, and urinary. In order to use our class time most effectively, we need tools to help us better manipulate the hard, oil-based clay. The extruders will allow us to make long, even, small cylinders of clay to represent arteries, veins, nerves, and lymph vessels. The “pasta” machines will allow the clay to be flattened more quickly for more skeletal muscles to be added later. These tools will allow us to integrate this modeling tool across the curriculum all year long in a variety of ways.
