Inquirers. Problem Solvers. Collaborators. These three words describe the 20 students in my 5th grade classroom. Learning in an International Baccalaureate school, my students thrive on hands-on learning through inquiry-based activities. Fifth grade math standards in South Carolina are challenging. My students come from many different backgrounds with varying mathematical knowledge, which requires more independent and small group instruction.
Students working collaboratively in math centers is a powerful method for teaching and reinforcing the rigorous 5th grade standards.
Knowing how my students love to work in groups, I try to incorporate as many group activities for all subjects as possible. Their favorite group activities, by far, are in math. As I monitor the room, I hear students discussing strategies to solve word problems, I hear mathematical language being used, and best of all, I see them enjoying every minute. No matter their educational backgrounds, I see students growing mathematically each day.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will be used in math centers during Guided Math. The students will work in pairs or small groups to manipulate the magnetic fraction pieces, add or subtract fractions by rolling the fraction dice, and use the individual whiteboards to work out challenging words problems. The card-stock will be used to print teacher-created mathematical task cards for the students to use during math centers. These task cards will be laminated for continued use.
My project will significantly improve my students' math skills through problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration.
These materials will engage and inspire my students to persevere through challenging standards.
