it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My youngest dancers love to move and explore! They come into dance class excited to learn new things. Creative movement is a wonderful way to make dance class feel like "play" while teaching a variety of dance concepts. I love to see my students' eyes light up when they discover new ways their bodies can move! The props I need for this project will be used to support social emotional growth in my young dancers but can also be used for activities for older students as well.
I enjoy using props in my creative movement lessons because it provides a tactile experience for my dancers and gives them the opportunity to learn how to share, take turns, and work collaboratively with their peers.
It provides an inclusive experience where all students can take part in the lesson and understand dance concepts more fully. In my youngest dance classes, we use creative movement to facilitate this growth, and with my older students we use "Dance Games" to do the same.
These activities not only help dancers learn important concepts and skills, but it fosters social emotional growth as well. Students learn how to take turns using the props. They learn how to share the props with one another. They learn how to communicate with one another and support their classmates while exploring movement with the props. Older students may use the props for strength and conditioning while also collaborating with their peers.
I am excited at the possibility of incorporating more intentional creative movement activities to increase social emotional learning skills in all of my students. I am hopeful that the skills gained in these activities will support my students outside of dance class as well.
