Working Through Trauma with Seating Options

My Students

Energetic, compassionate, and curious are just a few adjectives that describe my amazing group of kindergartners! They love to learn, play, and build connections to others. My kids come from all different backgrounds and have varying experiences of life so far.

The newest change at our school came about due to the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA.

On November 8th, the most devastating wildfire in California's history engulfed the town of Paradise and some of the surrounding areas. Luckily, our school in neighboring Chico, CA is safe. Many students in my class had family members impacted by the fire (loss of homes, etc.), and all of my students saw some of the side effects of the fire (evacuating, smoke, missed school, people in town needing assistance, etc.).

We are so excited to be back in school, although we are adapting to many changes. We have some awesome new students at our school (and in our class!!) that have been displaced due to the fire. We also have a lot of students who are dealing with trauma, worry, anxiety, and grief. I would love to be able to supply my students with these new supplies to lessen the burden they feel!

My Project

Kindergarteners are notorious for having a hard time maintaining focus. Add in the recent trauma we've experienced, and our class is looking for some new tools to help us adapt.

Wiggle cushions will give these wiggly learners the chance to comfort themselves, while still being focused on academics.

Allowing their bodies to move in a way that soothes them, but doesn't disrupt others, can make a world of difference to these five- and six- year olds!

Having a full class set of these options will allow all 29 of these amazing kids to make whichever choice is best for their learning style.
