This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
At the beginning of each school year, I explain to my students that just like I get paid to do my job every day, they will also get "paid" to do their "jobs." Similarly, if I did not perform my job adequately and did not meet expectations, there would be consequences. In my classroom, students are able to earn class money as a reward for positive expected behaviors. Each time students enter my class, they are able to earn up to $1.00 of class money. When they fail to meet expectations, they lose some of their "paychecks." This system holds students accountable for their actions, such as helping others and being on task, so that all students feel safe in the learning environment and that instruction is not interrupted by unwanted behaviors and distractions.
Although we want students to always do the right thing, kindergarteners, first and second graders, who have not yet fully developed intrinsic motivation to always work hard and do what is right, often need some extrinsic motivation to help them stay on track.
As a result, in order to create buy-in, students are able to cash in the class money they have earned for prizes. With this project, we will make sure that we always have the prizes available for students to earn. I would also like to encourage my students to learn real-life skills with their "money." They are able to now identify coins and add them together to make a dollar, however, when it is time to go to the store they often spend all of their money. With these new projects, I would like to have some big-ticket items like a play kitchen, flashlghts, water bottles, magnets, and toys that entices them so much it causes them to save their money.
