Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Beginning day 1 of 2nd grade, the students begin collecting pieces for their portfolios. We work like crazy to reach our 2nd grade goals. We read, write, do science, do math, and make art. We still have learning to do, but we are almost ready to create our 2nd grade portfolios.

I am a second grade teacher in a Title I school.

That means that my students come from low socioeconomic households. Also, 65% of my students speak a language other than English at home. Despite these challenges, my students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their math, writing, reading, science and social studies skills.

My Project

It is a tradition in my classroom and a deep part of my philosophy of teaching to teach the second graders to become reflective learners. From the first day of school, the kids are taught to be aware of the quality of work they produce. Also, we constantly review our old work to see our progress. Whiteboards are a GREAT way to do quick practice of math skills and spelling skills, and even though they take care of supplies we thoroughly use our markers quickly. We also collect ideas about our reading and spelling in composition pads I get cut in half. They are the PERFECT size for practicing second grade ideas! This year for reading, my class has been reading entire chapter books together and the kids are DEVOURING reading. As a final project in our room, the kids write autobiographies in hard cover books and organize the important work they have done all year in a portfolio folder. We reflect on our growth and enjoy seeing how much our brains have grown!

I want my classroom to be unforgettable!

This year, more than ever, the kids have worked harder, read more, learned to collaborate, and created very important projects. June is coming. We are ready to wrap up our second grade year. Portfolios are a special way to collect and reflect on material they have worked hard to complete. On the last day of school, the kids leave with a cherished memento of our learning.
