This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the honor of teaching six high school students who have multiple disabilities, ranging from moderate to severe intellectual disability, autism, visual impairments, and other health impairments, along with speech disorders. Our day consists of assisting with self-help and hygiene, related arts, morning meeting, fine motor activities, IEP work stations, pre-vocational training, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapies. Our school is a separate school that serves students throughout all of our county.
As part of our students' individualized educational plan, we take weekly trips into the community to practice pre-vocational skills learned in the classroom and shop for ingredients needed for recipes.
Our students also have access to the State Curriculum Standards and are evaluated on the SC-Alternative Assessment as directed by the "No Child Left Behind" mandate.
My Project
We are asking for Tie-Dye kits so that our students are able to learn about creating a product and then selling the product at our annual craft day. Students will gain the skills and knowledge of planning out the task of Tie-Dying, following multi-step directions and daily living skills of washing and hanging the t-shirts. Students will also enhance their communication and money skills on the day of the sale. Students will be communicating with customers via their own voice or an adaptive voice output device and counting out the correct amount of change needed using a money template.
We are so excited and hope our project gets funded again this year, because our students have had so much success the past two years with our Tie- Dye products.
