Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with many of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also an ethnically diverse school in Queens. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Arabic. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Two classes of many different abilities will come into the classroom to learn math and science. Two different classes with two very different needs emotionally, socially, and academically.
My Project
My students need a kidney table to appropriately work in small groups with the teacher. Classrooms currently have round tables that only comfortably fit three to four fifth grade students. Current circular tables also take up a lot of precious classroom space. It is very awkward and difficult to work with students at a round table especially when there is not much room. Often times students can not see what the teacher is writing until I turned around or the teacher must write upside down and is often messy and hard to read. A kidney table allows all student in the group to easily see what the teacher is writing or demonstrating. It also saves a lot more space in the classroom. A small bookshelf is also needed to store student science books for sixty-four students. The bookshelf is the perfect size to go on another shelf so that space is efficiently utilized.
