My Students
I currently teach American History to outstanding 11th graders in an urban school district. Despite the many challenges that come with being a teenager in today's society, my students are smart, funny, and quite determined if the situation calls for it. Although they are at an age where they yearn for independence, my students still like to know that they are cared for.
My 11th graders deserve to come to school knowing that their basic needs and safety are a priority.
I would like to show my appreciation to my 11th graders for being tenacious and hardworking during these challenging times by getting them some PPE and other much needed school supplies. Please know that whatever we receive will be gladly appreciated.
My Project
I teach approximately seventy five high school Juniors who come to school everyday excited to learn. In my social studies class, we are constantly reading and writing; thinking and analyzing and the students are active participants. Despite their excitement however, I am often reminded that I teach in a mostly low-income Title I school. This means that a lot of my students have a hard time having their basic health and safety needs met.
As their teacher, who simply wants the best for them, I strive to alleviate some of the pressure faced by parents and students by providing basic items like pencils, pens, paper, bandages, face masks, hand sanitizer along with snacks and water.
This allows my students to come to class and focus on learning and not on getting sick or being hungry. This is in addition to them knowing that they have a teacher who cares about their TOTAL well being.
Ultimately, I can totally see the difference in the performance of a child whose basic needs are being met compared to the performance of a child whose needs are not.
