Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything. I happily give it my all to teach these incredibly curious and imaginative students with high energy and engagement. Most of them speak English as a second language in an inner-city, Title I school and struggle through many hardships before even entering the classroom.
Despite many challenges, my students love learning and trying new ideas to make their projects better.
Our school supports all kinds of creative thought processes because, in a high poverty neighborhood, it is sometimes the only safe place that can provide support and opportunity to overcome the struggles of meeting our rigorous state standards.
My Project
Learning has it's rewards! With this project, students will use the Everything Kids' Money books to read, research, and gain the "cents" they need when working with money. The books instruct how coins and bills are made, what money can buy, how credit works, and how to make money grow.
The Osmo Genius kit has a numbers and problem solving component that builds the necessary math practice that helps students compute addition, subtraction, percentages, and fractions.
It also contains the bases necessary for the Osmo Pizza Co. component. The Payday board game will build on student knowledge by connecting money to everyday scenarios like paying bills, buying school supplies, and making responsible money choices with credit. Finally, students will culminate their learning with a hands-on, collaborative project by managing an Osmo Pizza Company where they will buy and sell supplies, learn to compute taxes, and watch their money grow.
Knowledge of financial literacy in school makes kids a part of the economy at an early age and increases future creativity, self-confidence, initiative, and entrepreneurship.
Your support will help students increase their mathematical skills and begin their important financial literacy journey at an early age. Thank you.
