Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
UFSA is a Middle school in Oakland that serves 6th through 8th grade students. Our school is a Title I school, where all students receive free lunch. Our students have diverse backgrounds coming from places in the Bay like Oakland and outside the Bay like Yemen and Mexico. Spanish is the home language of many of our students at UFSA. Our students are passionate learniers and thrive inside and outside of the classroom. While thriving accademically, many of our studetns also play for our schools soccer, football, and volleyball team.
There has been an increase of the amount of students that have made SRI growth and achieved grade level goals.
My Project
Students at our school sometimes struggle with reading. At times this is due to lack of motivation to read because they are reading two or more years below grade level and some students have difficulty accessing the English language as newcomers and English language learners.
Having these new prizes (Art portfolios, games, and books) to give to our students will create a stronger desire to invest more in reading time at school and at home.
I want to support all of our readers and give something that is fun that students can enjoy for a while after working so hard during distance learning!
