My school is a Title I school with a large percentage on free and reduced price lunch. Our school has a large Hispanic population as well. My class is a representation of this great community I live in. This community is comprised of different backgrounds.
The students in my class are from various backgrounds, but all come together to make our class a family.
Some students have two loving parents that do homework with their child every night; some students are not sure where the next meal will come from. Some students are not sure who is going to be at their house when they get off the bus. Some students have a single parent who is doing the best they can with what they have. All of these wonderful students make up one classroom, my classroom.
My Project
I have some students in my class who are entering the second grade with very limited English proficiency. These students are still learning to recognize letters, sounds, and simple sight words. Sight word readers will be a great way to introduce these students to the English language. Exposure to words and prints will be key to helping students learn to read and understand the English language. Out of 18 students in my class, 5 students are reading on a kindergarten level. These sight readers will help these students increase their reading levels. With increased reading levels, my students' confidence will rise.
