My students need access to word work activities specifically targeted to teach them spelling patterns and vocabulary, including curriculum books, word sort books, and word sort notebooks.
One of the things I love about our school is that it is extremely diverse. My ESL classroom alone has over ten languages spoken between its walls; English, Spanish, Farsi, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin Chinese, Igbo, Kinyarwanda (Bantu dialect from Rwanda), Hindi, and Greek!
Many of our students come from low-income families.
Each day, they receive their free breakfast and lunch without the slightest complaint of what the meal is. After Hurricane Harvey, so many families were displaced. While our school sustained minor damage, the homes and apartments around us had several feet of water in them. I want to help create a stable classroom environment during this time of chaos.
My Project
I vividly remember the two things I struggled with in elementary school: Math and Spelling. While math at least could be learned with constant rules that never changed, I just felt that I couldn't keep up with and remember all of those pesky spelling rules. Why couldn't we just spell it the way it sounded? My English Language Learners and native English speakers alike also struggle with spelling, and I want to give them explicit instruction to help cope with the difficulties of learning English spelling.
With access to the requested "Words Their Way" curriculum, notebooks and materials, my students can become super spellers - their way.
This innovative spelling, vocabulary, and word study program can be applied across many grade levels, and help so many of my students be successful. Our current spelling "program" merely gives them a weekly list, and they must learn the words. With Words Their Way, my students will have activities and games to help them truly learn the spelling patterns and rules.
