Words that STAMP! Writing with Children with Disabilities
My students need letter and number stamps to provide them the opportunity to create their first and last names as well as common sight words in an adaptive way.
Do you remember the first time you held a crayon in your hand and how excited you were to just color?! Holding onto a crayon or pencil can be a demanding task for your fingers. Offering an adaptive way to create your name gives one a sense of independence. Stamps are a tool that can do just that!
My students receive educational services in a separate setting classroom where individualized instruction is offered.
My students enjoy learning with hands-on materials. Each student is learning at a different level which means having a variety of learning manipulatives results in more experiences to be explored. A majority of my students live in a high poverty area where 70% or more are receiving free or reduced lunch. Having outside resources is limited for my students, school is an exciting time to offer opportunities to increase and improve the students academic and functionally needs.
My students are excited to learn but are becoming frustrated to complete table top activities. Using a pencil, crayon or marker is not as simple for my students. We are working on increasing their fine motor skills. It is so exciting when the students can spell out their name and now I want to provide the opportunity for them to spell out their name in written form- the form of stamps.
My Project
In my classroom, letters and numbers are worked on daily. My students are able to identify a majority of the alphabet but are having a difficult time presenting the letters. Letter formation is a daily struggle but what is exciting is that there are other forms of writing. Stamps are a great tool to use for those students who are able to spell their name. With stamps my students can make sure that their name is on their paper and do it independently with the use of stamps.
Handwriting Without Tears is exactly what I want in my classroom. This writing program assist students in creating and forming letters correctly. It is a step by step process that I feel my students would benefit from. Before using a writing utensils, the use of hands-on manipulatives is used to create the letters. Once the students have mastered the hands-on manipulatives, then writing with a utensil begins.
I look forward to the day when my students will be able to independently write their name!
Please consider assisting my students and my staff in writing their name, common sight words, and numbers.
Your donations will make it possible for me to teach my students at their individual levels and then encourage them to fulfill their dreams- being as independent as possible. Think about how much you write on a daily basis. Please consider donating to my grant so that they an practice "writing" you thank- you notes!
