Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The school that I teach at is a public charter school, that is run like a private school. Students are admitted through a lottery program, which makes many of the students feel as though they are lucky to be a part of this community. Because we are a small, public school resources are limited. Students and teachers are required to provide most, if not all, of the supplies and texts that we need in our classrooms.
My students have a passion for learning and truly enjoy being a part of our school.
I have a large number of students who thank me when they leave my room, which was a concept completely foreign to me. At previous schools, my students dreaded being there, but at our school the environment is largely a positive one. I know it sounds cliche, but I really do enjoy seeing these students every day.
My Project
Throughout the school year my students read a variety of books. As I continue my teaching career I try to adapt and add to my classroom library to try and create as many readers as possible.
I tell my struggling readers who hate reading that they just haven't found the right book yet!
In order to help them to do so, I need to have a variety of books available for them to explore. I'm learning though that my classroom library doesn't have a book for everyone yet. I recently bought a graphic novel to see how it would be received, and it has been signed out of my library since the beginning of the year.
Having a variety of books for my students to pick from will allow me to help those students who "hate" reading find just the right book for them!
