My students need hands-on activities to learn sight words and increase their reading skills. I am requesting sight word bingo, sight word talking boards and three other sight word games.
My students are ready to learn to read and a huge component is not just knowing letters and sounds but also being able to read sight words in a snap. However, my students learn best with active involvement not just inactive listening!
I teach an 'eager to learn' group of 21 active students in a public, Title I classroom.
My class consists of students with varying levels of previous academic backgrounds with some entering school already knowing the basics of reading and some entering school with little to no exposure to books. Most of my students are English speakers but some have limited English proficiency as English is their second language.
My Project
My students will use the chosen sight word materials to learn using active and engaging materials that will maintain their focus. Students will be more involved in their own learning and retain more information as these materials will involve more than just their ears to participate and gain the knowledge. The students will learn to recognize many common sight words in a snap to make their reading more fluent and increase their reading abilities. I am requesting hands on materials that will allow students to build sight words and learn to read sight words. One item is a Talking Sight Word board that will allow the student to view the sight word as they are hearing the sight word read aloud which will really impact their ability to read independently! Another item is sight word bingo. Students will be having so much fun playing a game that they will not even realize how many sight words they have obtained until they read it in a snap!
My goal is to have all of my students reading on grade level by the end of the school year.
In education, we know that it is not just about letters and sounds but learning to read those common sight words quick is key to not only understanding what is being read but in reading with fluency and increasing their reading level. If my students can leave my classroom already on grade level in reading it means they have a greater chance of continuing this path of on grade reading in future grades.
