My Students
I'm a Dual Language teacher at a school that serves economically disadvantaged students. My kind, inquisitive and energetic students are always eager to learn new things and be their best selves.
Many students in my classroom are struggling readers and have difficulty with vocabulary.
My students routinely ask me to explain what words mean and make their best effort to remember and use newly-learned words. For this reason, the classroom word walls are vital to the daily experience of my students.
My Project
An ample vocabulary is essential to literacy and especially to biliteracy. Students learn new words daily and practice using them in their daily writing. My classroom currently has bulletin boards very high on the wall above a shelf. I want to use the pocket charts to make the vocabulary words from the word walls more accessible and interactive, and the pointers for students to create meaningful sentences that incorporate high frequency words and newly learned vocabulary words. The sentence strips will be made available for the students to add to the word wall pocket charts on a daily basis. By making vocabulary accessible, engaging and meaningful, I intend to support and further develop the students' language skills to close the reading gaps in my ELL students.
