Word Vexed? - Voluminous Vocabulary to the Rescue!

My students need a class set of vocabulary journals, language journals, a Content Area Vocabulary Library Kit and Word-A-Day Activity Sheets.

My Students

Knowing exactly what to say or write is a talent that must be encouraged and developed in students. Usually, vocabulary work is vexing for my students which keeps them from having a voluminous vocabulary! Using journals and vocabulary kits helps to make word acquisition more interactive and fun!

My students are an exciting, verbose bunch of fifth graders who need a more varied vocabulary in both their oral and written assignments.

They attend a Title One public school and struggle with their oral speaking, oral comprehension and their writing because many of them are former or current English Language Learners who speak two or more languages and English is not their first - just their latest! To help encourage them to become wordsmiths in English I am asking for a mix of materials that will both address their English language needs and their vocabulary needs.

My Project

The Language journals will allow the students to develop their reading and writing mechanics in English in an interactive and organized way! The vocabulary journals speak to their different learning needs because they allow the students to not only keep a "word bank" in book format but to create illustrations that enhance their understanding and retention of the words. The content vocabulary library kit comes with beautiful color illustrations of vocabulary words that are grade specific and appropriate across the curriculum areas. Research shows that students have better retention when vocabulary is introduced with illustrations or pictures. Finally, the word-a-day activity sheets provide the students with activities around the word, to help them to move the word from their short-term memory to their long term memory!

Both a conversation or written note can be casual or formal but to be meaningful each has to be interesting and informative.

Funding this proposal will allow my students to increase their vocabulary skills and improve their language arts skills. Improved vocabulary translates to better school performance and workplace performance. Giving my students the gift of vocabulary is a long term gift of academic excellence.
