Word Processing Within the Classroom

Technology is a key component in the ever changing world and being able to use it appropriately is the key to being successful.

My class of 6th graders is no exception to this. They are a group of 32 students on a TK-6 campus of over 950 that is as diverse as the technology that we use. Our classroom is equipped with 12 iPads for 33 students. Although we have a computer lab, we are only provided access to the school computer lab once a week for 40 minutes. With this limited amount of time in the computer lab keyboarding skills are diminishing and students are more familiar with the hunt and peck concept rather than properly being able to type.

My Project

My goal with the keyboards is to help strengthen the keyboarding skills of my students by providing them access to typing more than once a week. Although we are only in the computer lab once a week, we use our iPads almost daily in all core subjects. The keyboards will allow my students better utilize all that the iPad has to offer. It will allow them the freedom to create and type stories, essays and research in language arts, create reviews, graphs and charts in math, express themselves creatively and more thoroughly with their STEAM projects, and compose more thorough research projects in Social Studies all while allowing them to practice their word processing skills.

The use of keyboards will allow my students to learn key word processing and typing skills that are necessary in everyday life.

With technological advancements as they are, most work is completed via a computer or a word processing program. Typing is a skill that is vital for all not only at an elementary level but beyond that into life as well. The more practice they get, especially at a younger age, the better equipped they will be to communicate effectively using technology.
