My second grade boys and girls are eager learners. They have lots of questions, and love searching for the answers. At this time we are beginning to use thesauri and dictionaries in order to investigate word meanings, spellings, words with like meanings, and replacement words for those they have overused in writing. The students have been patient but are getting frustrated. My classroom library consists of different kinds of dictionaries that the children must share. Some are paperback and very worn. In second grade it is important for the children to have the same materials, because they get confused when the smallest things are "different." Also, some of the dictionaries are not grade level appropriate for my students, so even though they have found the meaning of an unknown word, they still don't quite understand what the word means. The kids also get frustrated by sharing when one partner is not working fast enough for the other. With that said, I would love to be able to provide my children with access to elementary dictionaries appropriate for second grade students.
