Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching 9th grade Advanced Freshman English in a high minority based, impoverished high school is challenging. However, the students I teach have applied to and have been accepted into a rigorous, university preparation program which requires a great deal of dedication and hard work. This is a challenge, as the culture and climate of their community environment is contrary to the type of motivation that is required to succeed in this type of program and beyond. For example, many of my students are from families where they will be the first to graduate from high school, let alone attend a major university.
While our classroom does have a small class set of well-loved and used paperback dictionaries, the students do not have access to comprehensive, hard-bound college dictionaries. With such a set, my students will be able to soar to higher levels of learning.
With a set of ten comprehensive college dictionaries, my students will be empowered to expand their vocabularies by examining prefixes, suffixes, roots, synonyms and antonyms of words. College dictionaries will allow them to truly grasp the power of using a variety of vocabulary words.
By helping my students expand their vocabularies, you will ultimately become a guiding force to help foster these students' successes in high school and beyond. I thank you for donating to our classroom.
