Word on the Street

My students need hands-on manipulatives such as giant alphabet beads and word building blocks to help build word work skills.

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students routines revolve around a workshop model where students are continuously moving around throughout the classroom and meeting in small groups. They yearn for engaging activities to work on individually and together.

My students deserve the tools they need to help them learn to their highest potential.

By providing new avenues for my students to explore their thinking and learning they can stay engaged and focused.

My school is in the heart of a large city, and many of my students receive free or reduced lunch. My school can be described as urban and many of our students come to school hoping to escape from daily troubles at home.

My Project

My students need hands-on, engaging manipulatives to help them in their word work station. In this station, students learn to read, write and build words in order to help them with basic literacy skills.

By practicing in the word work station with hands-on tools such as giant alphabet beads and linking letter monkeys, students have a better chance of moving words and word building skills into their long term memory.

These skills will help my students become better readers and writers.

The requested tools will be used during our literacy stations. Students are expected to work independently or in small groups while I am pulling guided reading groups. It is important for my students to have these tools to help them stay engaged and on task so that I have less disruptions in my small reading group. These tools not only will help my students with gross motor skills but they will also help them learn grade level sight words, identifying letters, work on beginning and ending sounds in words, as well as word patterns. Students will use the different tools to complete individualized tasks such as, building names, forming consonant-vowel-consonant words, practicing words of the week and much more.
