My Project
Every year, I have my ELA students consider Oxford's Word of the Year and then design a word for themselves to guide their hopes and dreams for the upcoming year. I always want to allow my students to get excited about words and discover ways to connect words to their everyday lives. In years past, students have picked words like "create", "love", "hard work", "strength" and "grow". Every student comes to me with a lifetime of unique experiences, and it is always so exciting to see what word resonates with them. Activities like this give students confidence to know their lives and plans for the future are meaningful. Normally, I have them create bookmarks with their words but for 2024, I want to have them create personalized necklaces with their words stamped right on metal dog tags.
Students will be able to use these hands-on materials to create one-of-a-kind reminders of their word to guide and inspire them for all of 2024.
My middle school students dream big and I want them to encourage them to have those big dreams and give them little ways to make sure they can accomplish everything they dream of.
Using concepts from language arts plus a bit of social-emotional learning and planning skills, this project will push the students to think even more deeply about their words and be able to create a real-life reminder of their words as they enter high school next year.
