Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am the proud teacher of bright and energetic kindergarten children. These children all come from low income families and a strict school budget. When it comes to any additional materials for my students, I am on my own. I do what I can, but I also need your help. My goal is to create a "Word Family" center in our classroom. We have worked hard all school year to identify letters of the alphabet and the sounds that they make. We are now ready to put those letters/sounds together to form simple three to four letter words. We have already begun this process in school, but we need additional activitis to make it more enjoyable and inviting for these children. I am requesting Word Family Readers and Word Family activity cards. These skill building books introduce word families in context with fun filled rhymes and are created especially for emergent readers. Each book highlights 5-9 words from the same word family (example: bat,cat,fat,hat,rat,sat...) so children get the repetition they need to master spelling patterns and read with confidence. The target standards in these areas include indentifying spelling patterns, decoding & word recognition, increasing vocabulary and reading high frequency words. There are several different activities the children will have at their disposal to keep them engaged and interested. The materials requested will be used for both large and small group activities. All materials will first be introduced as a whole group activity and then we will break off into small group centers to reinforce the same skill. I know the children will be drawn to the bright colorful books and activity cards. Please help me make this center possible for these children this school year. I sincerely thank you for your time and consideration.
