Do you remember when you first learned to spell simple words? Now learning to spell can be interactive and engaging with magnetic word build boards. What a better way to encourage first grade students to decode and spell than with a hand-on approach that is sure to be appealing and engaging.
I have 28 wonderful and inquisitive first grade students.
They live in an urban community and attend an Illinois Charter School with an extended day and school year. The longer school day allows the children to work in workstations for both literacy and math. With a 2 hour reading block and a 90-minute math block, it is all about learning centers and small group instruction. We do lots of hands-on activities and center work. My students enjoy working in cooperative learning groups to reinforce skills and to explore new concepts.
From simple words to more challenging words with blends and digraphs, students practice building dozens of words sound by sound! The magnetic boards come with everything students need to build hundreds of different words, including picture magnets with familiar, everyday images, plus phonics magnets with the targeted sounds highlighted. The centers will target standards in a plethora of areas: long and short vowel sounds, blends and digraphs, spelling patterns, decoding, identifying beginning, middle and ending sounds and recognizing letter sounds and spelling patterns.
The magnetic letters and boards help students to focus on the words and sounds without having to struggle with pencil or paper.
Thank you for considering this project and helping first grade students build a firm phonics foundation that will have an influential impact on their their reading and writing.
