This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach seventh-grade science in a rural school. Our community is very diverse with many cultures represented. Over 80% of our children qualify and receive free or reduced-priced lunch, which means many of our children live in poverty.
We are also experiencing a growing number of families that are homeless.
Even though our children come from many disadvantaged homes, they come to school happy and so excited to learn. They know that they will leave with new knowledge every day.
My Project
This year every Friday is designated as STEM Friday. Each week my students will be given a project to complete using the STEM format. They will incorporate science, technology, engineering and math to design, create and test different projects.
My students will use wooden craft sticks, wooden cubes, wooden dowels and straws to create a mechanical, moveable hand.
The project will be that students will create a moveable, mechanical hand and the challenge is to see how many straws the hand can pick up.
Students will design, create and test a wooden mechanical hand using the STEM format. My students are always excited about STEM Fridays and this will be a great project to add to the curriculum.
