Wood Shop will Enable Tinkering in School's New Makerspace Room
Help me give my students a saw, a sawhorse, a drill, gloves, pliers, bits, wood screws and more building supplies so they can build birdhouses, Mason jar bird feeders, and countless other projects.
We are eager to help our school take the leap into Makerspace!
On our class survey, eighty-nine percent of students -- nearly 9 out of every 10 -- expressed a strong interest in helping set up our school's new Makerspace room.
But they are not only thinking of their own benefit; they want to make the space inviting to all of the classes on our campus. My students created this driving question: "How can we make students interested in the Makerspace/STEAM room?" Then they brainstormed ideas, such as decorating the walls and ceiling, along with setting out fun activities and supplies. What better than woodbuilding supplies that will help our other two PBL groups add to our recently created school garden?
Our Makerspace room, a former book storage room, will open in mid-October. That is when all 458 students on campus will be invited in with their class for a marble run design challenge. Our school is made up of 21 percent English Language Learners, 45 percent free and reduced lunch. Thanks for considering us.
My Project
Students in my class, and across my school campus, will be able to plan, design, and build with wood. The workshop will reflect nuances of my grandfather's shop, which inspired and nurtured me, some years ago.
These tools will fuel excitement for my school's soon-to-open Makerspace room.
The two portable work benches will give the workspace the proper appearance as a place where things get built.
Two groups of four students will be able to work simultaneously. My first group wants to build bird houses for hummingbirds and sparrows, while the other group wants to build hummingbird feeders out of Mason jars. Both will be placed in our school garden, which we started last year by planting native plants and setting up a solar bird bath.
