Wonders of Nature Meeting Rug

My students need a large carpet for the middle of the classroom where we can meet for whole group activities. This carpet perfectly ties into the natural themes taught in our current curriculum.

My Students

We are a Washington, D.C. public school Head Start PreK-4 class. My class represents a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Most importantly, though, they are each eager and hungry to learn.

While most people see children of this age as "babies," the truth is that this is a critical period in their overall development.

At this early age, they will develop habits and attitudes towards learning and socialization that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

My Project

This large rug will be an essential part of our classroom. The whole class meets on the rug first thing in the morning, where we set the tone for the rest of the school day ahead. Then though the day, this rug acts as "home base." The children play on this rug, talk on this rug, and gather to listen to stories and participate in class exercises - it gets A LOT of use!

This classroom rug is an essential piece of our comfortable and effective classroom.

For many of these children, this is their first experience away from home, not to mention their first exposure to a learning environment. So, it is important that this central classroom component have calm and comforting colors, as well as an easy tie-in to our natural-themed curriculum.
