This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege to touch and try to inspire gifted students who attend a Title I elementary school in Phoenix, Arizona, in which 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. They come from diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds. Their stories are as diverse as their backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common. They are all inquisitive. They love to learn!

The children who qualify for my program have tremendous academic potential, as they are gifted in at least one of these three areas: verbal, quantitative or nonverbal.

My goal is to create an environment which is stimulating and formative enough to harness their tremendous potential.

My Project

In this unit, students will explore the liquid state of matter. They will investigate the various properties of liquids and measure volume, density, tension and capillary action. Students will work in teams to conduct experiments with water, measuring the flow, time it takes to evaporate, condense, and more. The liquids kits I am requesting include real experiments connected to text, and they will engage kids and help them to truly understand their world.

When students see themselves as scientists, the process of inquiry has a dramatic effect on the young inquisitive mind.

Children develop not only a scientific understanding of the material itself but an understanding of themselves as lifelong learners. The research they will do, which will be directly tied to experiments, is purposeful and will develop higher order thinking skills along with reading abilities with nonfiction text.
