I am blessed to teach Kindergarten!!! My students are the ages of five and six. We have a wonderful school, but our budget got cut in half due to our lovely state senator and no state budget for education! We have not been able to purchase anything new in the past two years. Our principal has even taken money out of her own pocket to help buy a few things we needed. I have been using our writing center on an old table, but will have to use it this year as another table for my students to sit at! So...I wanted to write a grant to see if I could get an actual writing center!
I love my job and I love my students! They are the best at cheering you up and making you feel good about what you do every day! Unfortunately, with no state budget set for education...it has trickled down to all of the schools. We have not been able to purchase new items like furniture for two years now. This past year my classroom was blessed with receiving our "Rainbow Readers and Writers" grant that I wrote through donors choose. We received some great materials to help support their reading and writing...however, we had no specific places to write during centers except at out desks!
I would like for my students to have an "official" place that they can call their writing center! Still being one of the newest teachers, I am crunched for money myself! I have implemented some wonderful new writing programs for my Kindergarten class. One example of this is we have writers workshop that help build up their writing skills through using literacy and skills they already know and build upon them to encourage the writing process. When my students learned how to write a friendly letter last year, all they wanted to do was write letters to friends, family and myself!
The supplies that I have requested will help me to better implement the writing programs I have started. We already have all the little supplies to go along with a writing center, we just need an actual "designated" sitting area station where students can go and write their little hearts out! I have requested for our classroom an amazing writing center station/desk! It will be perfect for the space I am thinking of putting it. And with a writing center, there always comes chairs! So, I have requested four great durable chairs that will offer seating at the writing center if students choose to sit. These items will be a wonderful new addition to our classroom! I hope that having these new items in our room will make my vision of having a developmentally appropriate learning environment for students a reality. Thank you for your interest!
