I have a story to tell! First graders are filled with wonderful stories but lack paper to create a story on.
My school is located in a neighborhood that is ranked the third most dangerous area of the city of Chicago.
We have 98.5% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch and have limited resources for our school. Through these challenges, my first graders come to school ready to learn. For the past seven years, 85% of my students have met or exceeded the goal on the primary standardized assessments. My students love to explore the world of writing. Our school does not have adequate funds to purchase paper or a printer so that my students can create and publish their writings. We have wonderful children that are ready to learn and write about all the experiences and stories that make them unique.
My Project
In a well-rounded curriculum, writing has many benefits. Having the resources to create stories, books and poems is a wonderful experience. Change would occur for my students because writing helps develop individuality, self-expression, independent thinking, confidence building, listening skills, and reasoning and speaking skills. These are all key components that children need to make them great individuals. Funding this project will allow my students to have a rich, meaningful Writers Workshop experience. A printer will make it possible for them to print and create authentic work, draw illustrations, and share with classmates their finished products to be showcased. Students will learn strategies to engage, encourage, and develop them as better readers and writers.
The act of writing involves learning to understand yourself and others around you in the world.
This is very vital to the survival in our ever-changing society. Students deserve the simple things like paper to release those special gifts they have inside of them through the art form of writing.
