This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you were five years old, you just wanted to have fun. My students love to learn - but they also love to play! They need structured literacy workstations which will allow them the chance to explore and learn at their own pace.

I have a rambunctious group of 25 (and counting!) students.

Half of my class went to pre-school, and half of them did not - putting everyone, of course, at a different "starting point" in their learning! By the end of this year, my class of kindergarten kids will be independent learners who are able to read and write all by themselves. I need your help to get them there! The child's first and best interventions should happen in the classroom, and my goal is to create literacy workstations in the classroom that meet each child's individual needs, can be completed independently or with minimal assistance, and will allow children to be active learners.

My Project

Since my students are so young, I want to create a literacy block full of movement, singing, clapping and fun! Please notice that the items I selected all allow the students to move around, get out of their seats, and at the very least fully interact with the material. I cannot wait to use these materials to create workstations where the students will be able to work on individual skills at their own pace. Each item selected gives the students the opportunity to learn. For example, I chose Alphabet Balls to give students the chance to have kinesthetic experiences while also practicing their letter sounds. I chose sight word magnets to create an activity where students can make sentences and/or sort sight words. The sight word tactile cards will be an amazing intervention for students who are having trouble learning the sight words.

I think you can see what a huge impact these activities would have on my students - but it's not just this class of 25 that you would be helping.

My future kindergarten classes will be successful because - with your help - they had appropriate activities and interventions to allow them to become active learners. Reading is the basis for so much of our learning. I want to give these children the best jump start they can possibly hope for!
