Help me give my students magnetic letters and a storage cart, which will give them the practice they need to master word building…one sound at a time!
Our class is comprised of 24 first grade students. We aim to develop students who are internationally minded. Through rigorous academic curriculum, students gain the skills necessary to become outstanding citizens of a global community. The guided inquiry-based curriculum, which is also California content standards-based, helps children develop their understanding of the world around them by learning about big ideas that have global significance. Students exit the Primary Years Programme with an introduction to a second language, a set of skills and knowledge to continue in their learning of the world around them, and the attitudes necessary to be internationally-minded.
The Primary Years Program focuses on the development of the whole child, addressing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs.
At the same time, it gives children a strong foundation in all of the major areas of knowledge: mathematics, social studies, drama, language, music, visual arts, science, personal and social education, and physical education. The PYP strives to help children develop an international perspective - to become aware of and sensitive to the points of view of people in other parts of the world.
My Project
These magnetic letters will support each student in Making Words activities that teach students how to monitor for a visual and auditory match (or mismatch) during reading. This also firms up left-to-right visual scanning across a word. Students will need their own magnetic letters to make a series of dictated words.
The process that students use to determine the mismatch between sound and letter is the same process they will use later to self-correct during reading.
This multi sensory approach will provide increased student engagement as well as additional support to students with reading disabilities.
The storage rack will allow students to be more independent and cut down on transition time so we can maximize our word study instructional minutes.
