Help me give my students the recently updated 'Units of Study in Writing Series', which will equip me with the latest curriculum and strategies to support students’ abilities to be strategic, metacognitive writers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The updated writing units will help me teach my students how to write with more structure, clarity, and incorporate the necessary foundational skills to be successful communicators. Currently, we are using outdated material. Please help me get these newly published resources!
I will also be taking a 4-day course this summer, offered by the publisher, to learn how to utilize these new resources.
I am very excited about this professional growth opportunity, not only for my classroom but also to share what I've learned with my school community and fellow educators.
With these new units, students will learn how to make their opinion writing even more convincing by using a variety of reasons to support their opinions. They’ll practice noticing tiny details to come up with a list of reasons to support their views. This combined sequence of units will enhance the heart and soul of my writing curriculum while also setting children up to do rigorous work that addresses state standard expectations of them as first-grade writers.
Writing has proven to be the most challenging part of teaching first grade. Students are just developing their first words, letter-to-sound correspondence, and starting to view themselves as writers with important messages to communicate. Although it is challenging, it is incredible to see the growth that they make every year!
These Units of Study address the full range of domains emphasized by the reading research community, providing a truly research-based approach that brings the best of what we know into classrooms in ways that spark joy and equip teachers with the tools they need to teach responsively. These units will empower, revitalize, and strengthen my classroom instruction more than ever before—and that will build an even stronger community of learning, setting all kids on trajectories of growth.
